It’s a strange tale coming from Spencer, Massachusettes. JoJo Keefe headed to the park for a family outing. While there she and some other children saw a bat on the ground. It appeared to have fallen from a nearby tree. Jojo says all the kids there were fascinated with a tiny bat. “Everyone’s like, ‘Oh my God, there’s a bat!’” Jojo said.
A woman standing nearby encouraged the children to touch and hold the bat even when some were hesitant. One of the girls commented that she was afraid to hold the bat and asked if it would bite her. The woman replied, “No, it’s the friendliest thing ever.” The lady has not been identified.
When the bat reached JoJo’s hands, it bit her finger. When the ten year old went to show her mother the bite, her mother became very concerned and collected the bat in a container. She took it to animal control and had it tested for rabies. It’s a good thing she thought so quickly as two days later the family got a phone call telling them that the bat was indeed rabid. Her daughter has had to under go rabies shots and is expected to be fine.
JoJo commented, “All the other kids were saying it, ‘Oh it’s really sweet,’” she told WHDH. “‘It doesn’t have rabies, it won’t bite.’ Then it bit me, it had rabies, and it wasn’t sweet.”
