Baby boy survives after 17-year old mom is fatally shot, although in serious condition. Charinez Jefferson was walking with friends to a local convenience store when she stopped to talk to a guy friend. About that time a car went driving by and opened fire. News Affairs Officer Ronald Gaines said, “One of them yelled, ‘He’s got a got a gun,’ and everyone scattered”.
Jefferson was found lying on the street with gunshot wounds to her body and head, said Fire Department spokesman Will Knight. When paramedics arrived, she was in full cardiac arrest.
Jefferson’s mom said, “”I really don’t know what happened,” the teen’s mother told the Tribune. “She was going to the corner store. She stopped to talk to a guy she knew and someone drove up and opened fire. That’s what I’ve been told. I got down there but they already roped it off. I couldn’t get to her.” She believes that her daughter was not targeted although no one else was hurt. Her daughter was six months pregnant.
Jefferson had a 1 year old child at home in addition to the one she was carrying. The baby was born after medical staff put mom on life support to deliver her baby. He weighed 7 pounds and 3 ounces, is in critical but stable condition.
