October is “National Breast Cancer Awareness Month”. Awareness in not just about breast health, although important, but we must focus too on how our bodies grow tumors. The speculation on how these rogue cancer cells begin to grow is not new, such as, an injury to the breast, an infection, a weakened immune system and of course hereditary factors, can play a role in developing breast cancer. Doesn’t it make sense to build up our immune systems so that when things like this do happen, our bodies stand a better chance of fighting them off?

Experts are now saying that there are things we can do to help our bodies. Not just supplements for that specific illness or disease, but rather building the body’s immune system to be the best that it can be to help fight off disease. Some nutritionists say that overloading our bodies with meat injected hormones builds within our bodies over time and can suppress our immune systems or in the least overload it. Buying organic or natural meat might be something you should consider. The same goes for fresh vegetables. Again, look for organic that has not been sprayed with chemicals or pesticides. Washing non-organic produce may not remove all pesticides. Some actually penetrates the skin of the produce, although federal regulators say it’s not enough to cause harm. What they say now, they may not stand behind in the future, in my opinion.

Supplements that build the body’s immune system would be a good approach as well. Reach for Vitamin C, D3, Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium, Selenium, Omega 3′s and probiotics. Go to a health food store and get pharmaceutical grade vitamin supplements. Some off the shelf vitamins from drugstores and grocery store chains are not up to par and lack the quality that your body needs.

Researchers have found that probiotics do more than just balance out the digestive flora in the gut but have immune properties as well. Don’t just buy supplements that the representative offers when visiting your local health food store. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve done this. Do some research online. Be careful though, there are so many websites set up with false information to get you to buy products. Go to vitacost.com or iherb.com and read what the reviews say. Go to Dr. Oz’s website and read or listen to everything that he has. This guy knows what he’s talking about. Either way, don’t sit and do nothing. Your body and health depends on it.

Don’t forget to add in 30 minutes of exercise, three times a week. We can’t talk about total body awareness without mentioning the importance of physical exercise. It doesn’t really matter what the exercise is as long as you are keeping your body moving during those 30 minutes, such as brisk walking, running or aerobics.

What you do now can extend your life later. Why not take this month to look at your total health awareness. Your body will thank you.
